Local knowledge

Science parks, colleges and a hangar at Duxford

Cambridge asks for simulators for reasons that are particular to Cambridge. The working population here is concentrated in research and technology, the cluster of software, semiconductor and life science companies people still call Silicon Fen. AstraZeneca runs its global research and development centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Arm sits on the south side of the city, and there are science parks in every direction, each with its own calendar of conferences, open days and recruitment evenings.

That audience shapes what we get booked for: recruitment stands that need a reason for people to stop walking, conference sponsorship where a client wants their name on something guests will queue for, team socials for R and D groups who’ve spent six months on the same problem, and Christmas parties in college halls. A lap time’s a number, and Cambridge is full of people who won’t let a number stand.

The old city takes a little planning. Vehicle access to the historic centre is controlled by rising bollards and camera-enforced gates, so college and city centre load-ins usually happen first thing or in the evening, around your venue’s permit window. Flight cases roll easily on a science park floor and badly on gravel or cobbles, so tell us the route and we’ll bring the right size of team for it.

The science parks

Cambridge Science Park has its own events space at the Trinity Centre and takes a full line-up without fuss. Granta Park, Babraham and the Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton have level access, wide doors and car parks, among the easiest venues we work in anywhere.

IWM Duxford and Newmarket

Duxford, about nine miles south, is the venue people remember. A hangar full of aircraft is an unusually good place to park a row of F1-style simulators. Newmarket Racecourse suits the larger hospitality days.

Colleges and the city centre

College halls and courts host formal dinners, alumni events and summer parties in rooms built centuries before anyone thought about load-in routes. The Corn Exchange and the Guildhall take the bigger parties.

Away days in parkland

Madingley Hall, out on the western edge, handles away days and weddings in parkland. Older buildings sometimes mean a longer carry or a flight of stairs, which just changes the team size we bring.

Local questions

Asked about Cambridge events

Do you charge extra to deliver to Cambridge?

No. Cambridge is about 65 miles from our base at the Silverstone Innovation Centre, up the A43 to Kettering and then the A14 east through Huntingdon. That puts the whole city and the science parks around it inside the 100 miles of delivery included in every price, so there’s no mileage on a Cambridge quote and no overnight to pay for. The extras that might apply are a £300 charge if your event finishes after 10pm and 10% per hour for extended hours, both on your quote before you book.

Can you set up in a college or a city centre venue?

Yes, with some planning: vehicle access to the historic centre is controlled by rising bollards and camera-enforced gates, so we normally load in early in the morning or in the evening around your venue permit, and setup takes about two hours. Tell us where our 6.9m vehicle can legally stand, how far the carry is from the tailgate to the room, and whether it crosses gravel, cobbles or stairs. None of that’s a problem when we know first; it changes the team size we bring, not the price you were quoted. One 13A socket runs two sims, and in an older building we’ll check how many sockets share a ring before we plan the layout.

How many simulators fit in a science park atrium?

More than most planners expect. Each simulator occupies roughly 1.61m by 0.6m of floor and stands 1.42m tall, so six sit comfortably along one wall of a decent atrium with room to queue and watch. Up to 16 F1-style simulators can race together on a single live leaderboard when the space allows. Send us a floor plan, or even a photo of the space, and we’ll tell you the realistic number.
